The Chilean military dictatorship began on September 11, 1973, when President Salvador Allende was ousted from power through a military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet. Chile became yet another South American country to be governed by a dictator. For 15 years, Pinochet ruled with an iron hand, being ruthless against his opponents.
In 1988, Pinochet suffered a defeat as a result of a plebiscite, in which 56% of voters rejected his continuation in power. Shortly after the end of the dictatorship, the military accused of crimes against Human Rights were tried and sentenced to prison.
